It seems that Conservatives are beginning to realize that despite their best efforts to stop it, the world around them is changing. And they were shocked to learn this week that regardless of the new law passed in Indiana, most of the country no longer shares their belief that religion gives them permission to perpetuate injustices that were acceptable 50 years ago. But that hasn’t deterred them from making a desperate attempt to defend homophobic discrimination by insisting that they are merely obeying God’s will.
So the result this week was a collision between bigotry and religious freedom…with a small town pizza joint caught right in the middle. When the Christian owners of the pizza place were forced to close because they received so much negative backlash from across the country following their anti-gay admissions, the religious right fought back hard, and their weapon of choice was money.
As soon as the word got out that protesters caused the closing of the first Christian business in Indiana, right-wing media jumped all over the story. Dana Loesch, who works for Glenn Beck’s network, The Blaze, was quick to get an interview with the owners of the restaurant and then she and her staff immediately opened a GoFundMe account to raise money for them.
In just a little more than one day, they have been able to raise more than half a million dollars. (Yes, seriously.)
Gay-hating Conservatives have been coming out of the woodwork from all over the country to donate to this tiny pizza place, which has become the symbol for Christianity battling the gays. It’s really quite remarkable how the religious right has turned their outright discrimination and disdain for homosexuals into some kind of Christian persecution story. Honestly, they are doing their very best to keep gays in this country from having any kind of equal rights or legal protections, and yet they are shouting from the rooftops that it is actually the Christians in this country who are the real victims.
When I say that these Conservatives are gay-hating bigots, I don’t use the term lightly. Just in the last day and a half since the GoFundMe account was opened, social media has been on fire with righties openly bashing gays and spewing hatred. Twitter has been trending with things like “GAYS ARE THE NEW ISIS.” And if you really want to see some outrageous bigotry, take a look at the comments on the GoFundMe page. Here are a few examples…
