Some Liberal Commentary On GOP Christianity

“If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
— Luke 3:11

Ghandi said, “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” And I fully agree.

I have been a Christian all of my life, but I don’t usually say it openly because in my opinion there are so many Christians who don’t stand for anything I believe, that it makes me hesitant to say that I’m part of that group of people. The God I believe in is about love and kindness. He is about forgiveness and compassion for ALL living things. And it is my strongest belief that we were put here on this Earth to learn to love each other.

So when I hear people espousing hatred toward certain groups or religions in the name of Christianity, I simply don’t get it. The God that I believe in does not tell us to hate anyone…quite the opposite actually.

I was asked recently why I hate Conservatives so much. Truly the question surprised me. I don’t hate Conservatives at all. My own mother, who I love dearly, is a proud member of the Tea Party. Now I generally disagree with them and don’t see the world the way they do, but that is not the same thing as hate. I can vehemently disagree with you without hating you as a person. From my perspective, Conservatives have every right to their opinions and beliefs, even if I think that they are totally wrong. But what I also firmly believe is that while you have the right to your opinions, you don’t have the right to force them onto anyone else.

Honestly, it very often feels to me that people who hate others do it because they are scared of anything different and they are terrified of any sort of change. But because they can’t admit that they instead try to justify their hatred by using the cover of religion. I could give you a million examples of this, but let’s just use Michele Bachmann because she exemplifies my point perfectly.

Last summer Ms. Bachmann was on a Conservative radio program called Faith and Liberty. Now Michele has never been one to shy away from the media and many might argue that she, like so many other neo-Cons, says the outrageous things she does because she is always looking for attention. I would agree with that, but I also worry that she, and many many others, really do believe the crazy she spews.

Bachmann literally said that the gay community was pushing deviancy, tyranny, and child rape. She claimed that it was obvious what gays were trying to do. According to Bachmann, the gay objective is to

“abolish age of consent laws, which means we will do away with statutory rape laws so that adults will be able to freely prey on little children sexually. That’s the deviance that we’re seeing embraced in our culture today.”

She also is convinced that the gay community will soon legalize polygamy and enact a ton of new hate speech laws across the country. And now I know what you’re thinking….Why would the gays want to do all of this? Well, according to Michele Bachmann it’s all about persecution of the Christians. Naturally.

Bachmann insisted that she feels it is her duty to spread her Christian message of love and joy and she asked that all Conservatives join her in telling God’s truth about the gays. And no, I’m not kidding. Seriously, I couldn’t make this stuff up.

Michele Bachmann is spewing outright lies and hatred about homosexuals, and she’s doing it in the name of Christianity. I really do wish that she was the only one doing this. That way we could just chalk it up to one lone wing-nut. But sadly, Bachmann’s message is resonating with many on the right. And if you have any doubts about this one at all, just watch as the 2016 Presidential election cycle continues. I can all but guarantee that you will be hearing Bachmann’s words ringing back in your ears through the voices of several of the GOP candidates.

Honestly, speaking as a Christian, all I can say here is that if you are hating an entire group of people based on your misguided interpretation of the Bible, then you just don’t get it. And my message to people like Michele Bachmann and the GOP Clown Car is….Hey, you’re totally doing it wrong.
