If I asked you right now whether there were more cops or toddlers killed by guns each year in this country you’d likely say cops right? After all, they face dangers every day that most of us will never know. So the logical answer would be cops. But in this case the logical answer would be wrong.
The disturbing reality is that a toddler in this country is more likely to be murdered by a gun than a police officer in the line of duty…MUCH more likely.
Politifact breaks it down like this….
According to the FBI and Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013 there were 26 police officers shot in the line of duty in this country. (This includes officers from the smallest sheriff’s department to the largest federal agency.)
By comparison, 82 children ages 0-4 were killed by guns. And sadly, these stats have been constant since 2008.
Business Insider shows these startling statistics in a couple other graphs.
If we take a look at cumulative deaths from 1999 on the results are much the same. Between 1999 and 2013, 1,120 children between the ages of 0-4 were killed with guns while only 766 police officers were killed by the same.
Literally more toddlers than police officers (by FAR) are being slaughtered by firearms in this country every year.
Still think we don’t have a gun problem?
