Texas Lawmaker Says State Can’t Accept Syrian Refugees Because It’s Too Easy To Buy Guns In Texas

Texas Rep. Tony Dale (R) wants the Federal Government to stop allowing Syrian refugees into his state because….wait for it…it’s too easy to buy guns in Texas. And yes, I’m serious.

As the Republicans continue to work neo-Cons into a frenzy with fear mongering about Syrian refugees, several red state governors have publicly stated that they will not allow any of the refugees into their states. Of course, the problem with those statements is that the governors are well aware of the fact that they do not have legal authority to stop the relocation process, but facts have never stopped righties from a good Fox News headline.

Throughout all of this nonsense we’ve heard a few different reasons why the neoCons say they don’t want the refugees coming into our country or states. But basically, most of them boil down to using fear tactics to demonize Muslims.

I have to wonder though, if perhaps they are starting to realize that most sane Americans just aren’t buying into the crap they’re selling. I say that because one state legislator just made the case to block refugees from his state with an argument that went in a most unexpected direction.

Texas Rep. Tony Dale (R) wants the Federal Government to stop allowing Syrian refugees into his state because….wait for it…it’s too easy to buy guns in Texas. Yes, I’m serious.

In letters to Texas’ U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and U.S. Reps. Michael McCaul and John Carter, Dale said,

“While the Paris attackers used suicide vests and grenades, it is clear that firearms also killed a large number of innocent victims. Can you imagine a scenario were [sic] a refugees [sic] is admitted to the United States, is provided with federal cash payments and other assistance, obtains a drivers license and purchases a weapon and executes an attack? Do whatever you can to stop the [Syrian refugee] program.”

It’s interesting to note that not only is Tony Dale a proud member of the NRA with an “A” rating, but he and his gun-nut colleagues in the Texas state legislature have also consistently blocked mandatory background checks for all gun purchases.

Of course, Tony Dale justifies his insane positions by saying that there is no need for any sort of gun regulation because ‘criminals don’t legally purchase firearms.’ Dale is just one more NRA puppet who is happy to parrot the same old tired lines. But contrary to what they may say, the research proves that the vast majority of guns used in mass shootings in this country were bought legally.

Beyond the obvious, here’s what I find so ironic about this story…the position that Tony Dale is taking here is that when it comes to the Syrian refugees, even though most of them might be good law-abiding people, there is that slim possibility that one of those 10,000 could pose a real threat. And because of that all of them should either be denied altogether or be put through a very thorough background check. Because putting even one of our innocent citizens in jeopardy is a risk that is simply not worth taking.

Now maybe it’s just me, but somehow that argument sounds like the neoCons just conceded to all of the principles of common sense gun control. Unfortunately for Mr. Dale, however, his argument against the refugees is lacking that “common sense” factor. Because since 1980, the U.S. has brought in literally millions of refugees and virtually none of them have proven to be terrorists.

The sad fact is, in this country the real danger that we face each and every single day is gun violence. We lead the world in mass shootings, and that senseless violence is not being committed by foreigners. Those terrorists are born right here in our own country.
