While our Republican politicians are coming up with ways to keep refugees escaping terrorism and civil war out of our country, Canadians have already begun welcoming them into theirs. Even the Canadian kids are welcoming the Syrian refugees.
While the U.S. is still arguing over whether or not to accept the 10,000 refugees Obama wants to bring in over the next year, other countries are already stepping up and doing the right thing. Between now and March Canada will be resettling approximately 25,000 refugees fleeing from violence and unrest in the Middle East. And late Thursday night the first 163 Syrian refugees arrived in Toronto.
But instead of coming into a new country and being hit with a barrage of hostile words from someone like Donald Trump, they are being welcomed by the Canadian people. In fact, the Canadian children have been sending in very heart warming messages to welcome their new neighbors and friends. And several of them have been put together to make this sweet video.
The children’s messages are being collected by a community development non-profit called World Vision Canada under the hashtag #CanadiansWelcome. And the video features children welcoming the refugees to Canada in several different languages including English, French, Spanish, and German.
One little girl excitedly says, “See you in school!”
Another child says, “I can’t imagine what you’ve been through, and I really hope you like it here in Canada.”
I’d say that right about now the U.S. could learn a thing or two from our northern neighbors. And sometimes the things we need to hear most come straight from the mouths of babes.
