Without permission from the parents, Carly Fiorina used a group of 4-year-olds on a school field trip as props for her anti-abortion rally.
Imagine sending your 4-year-old off on a preschool field trip to the botanical gardens to learn all about plants. And then imagine finding out at the end of the day that the class was suckered into becoming props for a Republican Presidential candidate to use for her anti-abortion rally.
Well that’s exactly what happened in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday.
As the preschool children were touring the Greater Des Moines Botanical Gardens, Carly Fiorina was entering her “right-to-life” forum at the same venue and spotted them. As she entered the rally in front of a crowd of about 60 people, Fiorina gathered and directed 15 young children toward a makeshift stage.
As you could imagine this didn’t sit well with many parents who never gave permission for their children to sit and listen to a woman tell of the horrors of abortions or the details of how doctors take harvested organs from aborted babies.
One of the parents told the Guardian,
“The kids went there to see the plants. She ambushed my son’s field trip.”
Parents said they were never asked if Fiorina could interact with the children, and they certainly weren’t asked if the kids could take part in an anti-abortion rally. The parents didn’t even learn about what happened until after the fact when the teacher had to explain the encounter.
One angry parent said,
“Taking them into a pro-life/abortion discussion [was] very poor taste and judgment. I would not want my four-year-old going to that forum – he can’t fully comprehend that stuff. He likes dinosaurs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers.”
In response, a Fiorina spokeswoman said in an emailed statement,
“We were happy that these children chose to come to Carly’s event with their adult supervisor.”
