Domestic violence is a very real issue in this country. But it’s a very complex problem. Why do some women (and some men) stay in abusive relationships? And why are others able to leave? Meredith Vieira explains her own personal experience and why she did what she did.
In 2014 Meredith Vieira revealed to her audience that she too has been a victim of domestic violence. She explained that this is a very complicated issue and talked about the reasons that she chose to stay in the abusive relationship.
“Every nine seconds,” Vieira says on her show, “a woman is abused or assaulted in this country. Every nine seconds this is going on.”
She continued, “this Twitter trend that’s happening now – #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft. It’s a campaign of confessions of women who have experienced domestic violence, and what you realize when you read these Tweets is that it’s a very, very complicated issue.”
Vieira then went on to describe her own experience with domestic violence.
Her testimony is both moving and inspirational because she did eventually find the strength and courage to leave. Vieira is right that this is an extremely complicated issue and millions of women stay in their abusive relationship for a variety of reasons. Check out this clip from The Meredith Vieira Show, where Vieira gives us her story about why she stayed so long.
