At Sunday’s debate Hillary invoked Abe Lincoln to explain something she said in a paid private speech. Republicans are using that statement to push the narrative that Hillary is a liar and two-faced. Well let’s see what the fact-checkers have to say about this….

On Friday more Russian-hacked emails and documents were released by Wikileaks. This time they hacked Hillary’s campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails. And they released selected excerpts from some of Hillary’s paid speeches.

One of the passages that the Republicans are pouncing on is from a speech in which she says that it’s often necessary for political leaders to have “both a public and a private position.” Republicans are using that statement to push the narrative that Hillary is a liar and two-faced.

At Sunday night’s Presidential debate, moderator Martha Raddatz pushed Clinton to answer for her controversial statement.

“Is it okay for politicians to be two-faced? Is it acceptable for you have have a private stance?”

Hillary responded by putting things in context. She explained that she used the public and private positions statement while talking about Abe Lincoln. She said that she had just seen the movie Lincoln where Abraham Lincoln used back room deals to get the Congress to pass the 13th amendment ending slavery.

Hillary was expressing her admiration of how Lincoln was able to get things done for the betterment of the country.

“As I recall, that was something I said about Abraham Lincoln after having seen the wonderful Steven Spielberg movie called Lincoln. It was a master class watching President Lincoln get the Congress to approve the 13th Amendment.”

“It was principled and strategic and I was making the point that it is hard sometimes to get the Congress to do what you want to do. You have to keep working at it and yes, President Lincoln was trying to convince someone and he used some arguments, and convincing other people, he used other arguments.”

After her response Trump went on the attack. He mocked her for bringing up Lincoln and called her a liar. And following the debate right-wing media relentlessly made fun of her answer saying that it was the dumbest worst lie she could’ve come up with.

Well it turns out that the AP fact-checked Hillary’s answer and surprise surprise….she was telling the truth!

The AP said,

HILLARY CLINTON, in response to a question about her saying that politicians need to have “both a public and a private position” in a 2013 paid speech, said, “As I recall, that was something I said about Abraham Lincoln after having seen the wonderful Steven Spielberg movie called Lincoln. It was a master class watching President Lincoln get the Congress to approve the 13th Amendment.”

DONALD TRUMP replied, “She lied. Now she’s blaming the lie on the late, great Abraham Lincoln.”

THE FACTS: Clinton’s recollection is correct.

Clinton invoked the movie “Lincoln,” and the deal-making that went into passage of the 13th Amendment, which outlawed slavery, in an April 2013 speech to the National Multifamily Housing Council.

According to excerpts of the speech included in hacked emails published last week by WikiLeaks, Clinton said politicians must balance “both a public and a private position” while making deals, a process she said was like making sausage.

“It is unsavory, and it always has been that way, but we usually end up where we need to be,” Clinton said according to the excerpts. “But if everybody’s watching, you know, all of the backroom discussions and the deals, you know, then people get a little nervous to say the least. So, you need both a public and a private position.”

As a matter of fact it turns out that it was actually Trump….not Clinton…who was the big liar of the night.

Here’s what Politifact found after they fact-checked the entire debate:
