It’s great to see Hillary relax and lighten-up a bit with a humorous speech at the Al Smith charity dinner. She was charming and funny, and she pulled off several great zingers. After such an intense campaign, it really is great to see her have a little fun!
The Alfred Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is an annual white-tie event. The dinner is a fundraiser for Catholic charities supporting needy children. And since 1960 it has become a tradition for presidential candidates to come together right before the general election and have a little lighthearted fun.
This event is designed to be a humorous night where the candidates make fun of themselves and tease each other a bit too….sort of like a roast. It’s a formal event that gives the candidates a chance to take a break from their long-fought serious campaigns and just have a good time.
This year both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump gave speeches. And after the very nasty debate the night before, there was some concern that this night could turn into an uncomfortable disaster.
Trump spoke first. And while he did have a couple very funny jokes, most of what he said was straight off his campaign trail, directly viciously attacking Hillary. He told a joke about Melania stealing Michelle Obama’s speech that was a big hit in the room. But the majority of what he said totally turned the audience filled with priests off. As a matter of fact, for the first time in the history of this event, the audience actually booed Trump several times.
But as we’ve seen so many times in this election, when Trump went low….Hillary went high. She spoke second and delivered some great jabs at Trump. She also had a very positive uniting message at the end.
I think we’ve all been spoiled with President Obama over the past eight years. He can be very funny and has great comedic timing. And by comparison, Hillary doesn’t seem as natural with it. But for a woman who most people think is stiff and serious, Hillary actually has a great sense of humor.
She definitely shined at this event Thursday night. She was charming and funny, and she pulled off several great zingers. After such an intense campaign it really is great to see her have a little fun!
