It had to be really difficult to come out and speak tonight….Hillary admitted as much. But she did it anyway. And if she can continue fighting, then we damn well can too.

On Wednesday night Hillary made her first public appearance since conceding the election. She spoke at a charity event for The Children’s Defense Fund in Washington D.C., where they presented her with an award for a lifetime of service. Her appearance at the event was planned before the election.

I think most of us are still stunned and deeply upset about her unexpected loss. But seeing her tonight really did give me some hope. Hillary expressed tonight what so many of us are feeling. You could feel her pain when she spoke. It’s both heart-breaking and oddly comforting to know that we share in her pain.

“I know many of you are deeply disappointed about the results of the election. I am too, more than I can ever express.”

She continued,

“There have been a few times this past week when all I wanted to do is just to curl up with a good book or our dogs and never leave the house again.”

But her message actually wasn’t sad. In fact, her courage and resolve were quite inspiring. It would be really tough to listen to her words tonight and not feel hope.

“America is worth it. Our children are worth it. Believe in our country, fight for our values and never, ever give up.”

“Service is the rent we pay for living,” she said. “You don’t get to stop paying rent just because things didn’t go your way.”

It had to be really difficult to come out and speak tonight….Hillary admitted as much. But she did it anyway. And if she can continue fighting, then we damn well can too.
