Kate McKinnon’s Hillary looked straight into the camera with tears in her eyes, and said, “I’m not giving up, and neither should you.”
This weekend we saw the first episode of Saturday Night Live since Trump won the presidency. So far this season SNL has opened every episode with funny skits mocking Trump, Hillary, and the election. We’ve been watching Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon hilariously play Trump and Clinton for weeks now.
But this week was different. This week’s opening wasn’t funny. It was a beautiful performance. For people who supported and voted for Hillary it was both sad and also inspirational. I think it really reflected the mood of so many of us right now.
This week Saturday Night Live’s open didn’t include Baldwin at all. This week it was just Kate McKinnon on her own. She played Hillary Clinton in a much more serious moment playing the piano and singing “Hallelujah.” And then at the end of the song she turned, looked straight into the camera with tears in her eyes, and said, “I’m not giving up, and neither should you.”
The whole tone was spot on. Most of the country is sad and genuinely scared. And we’re all looking for something to give us hope. But McKinnon was right….now more than ever we can’t give up fighting.
