Trump’s ties to Russia and Putin just got a whole lot tighter with his pick for Secretary of State.
NBC News reported on Saturday that Donald Trump has chosen ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State.
This is extremely concerning not only because he’s a gazillionaire big oil guy who opposes the EPA, but also because he has strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that Tillerson and Putin negotiated a $500 billion deal in 2011 to partner in drilling for oil in the Antarctic and the Gulf of Mexico. According to Reuters, the deal was put on hold because of sanctions levied on the Kremlin in 2014 for annexing Crimea. Tillerson says the Putin deal will go on as soon as the sanctions are lifted. And as Secretary of State Tillerson can help that happening.
Tillerson was also awarded Russia’s highest honor the country bestows on foreign nationals, the Russian Order of Friendship.
NBC’s Andrea Mitchell is reporting that her sources are telling her the Tillerson pick will be announced next week. She also said the former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will be the deputy at State. For those of you not familiar with Bolton, he is a neoCon extremist who ran a PAC that contributed over $5 million to Trump’s campaign.
“The selection of the Putin ally comes just hours after the Washington Post reported that the CIA had assessed that Russia had interfered in the U.S. election in an effort to help Trump get to the White House.
Trump pushed back on the report with an attack on the CIA. An unattributed statement from his transition team said of the agency, “These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.”
If the NBC report proves accurate, all eyes will turn to the GOP senators who have taken the most hawkish stances toward Russia, as Democrats will likely only need three Republicans to cross the aisle to block the nomination.”
