When even Fox News is criticizing him, you know Trump really screwed up.
On Tuesday, CNN published an explosive story about Trump’s Russian ties. CNN reported that U.S. intelligence now believes Russia may have dirt on Trump they haven’t released yet. CNN also said that there’s an ongoing investigation into Trump’s campaign having direct ties to Russia throughout the election.
Predictably, Trump denied the entire thing.
And then on Wednesday morning, he held his first press conference in nearly six months. Because of CNN’s report, it was obvious that the President-elect would be fielding questions about his Russian connections.
But in typical Trump fashion, he was a vindictive bully to CNN’s reporter at the presser. Trump berated Jim Acosta and accused his network of reporting “fake news.” And then he continually refused to allow Acosta…or any other publication that ran CNN’s report…to ask questions.
After Acosta’s futile efforts to get a question answered, Trump’s new Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, threatened to throw the reporter out if he tried to ask anything else they didn’t like.
Many news outlets took offense to the way Acosta was treated. Even Fox News was upset.
Wednesday night on Fox, Shepard Smith actually closed his show with sharp criticism of Donald Trump for his treatment of the CNN reporter.
“President-elect Trump today told CNN’s Jim Acosta that his organization amounts to fake news. CNN’s exclusive reporting on the Russian matter was separate and distinctly different from the document dump executed by an online news property.”
“Though we at Fox News cannot confirm CNN’s report, it is our observation that its correspondents followed journalistic standards and that neither they nor any other journalists should be subjected to belittling and delegitimizing by the president-elect of the United States.”
Trump doesn’t seem to understand it yet, but his horrible and antagonistic treatment of the press will never get him the result he so desperately wants. He can’t bully people into respecting him. And it’s not the job of the media to shower him with praise.
