It’s alarming how Trump and his team are attempting to threaten and intimidate anyone who questions or criticizes the President-elect.
Donald Trump’s refusal to divest himself from conflicts of interest is extremely disturbing. But his bullying and threatening of people who question him is even more alarming. It seems that Trump has no interest in abiding by ethics laws that get in the way of his personal financial gain. He’s far more concerned with silencing any voices of dissent.
Republicans have already attempted to dismantle the government ethics watchdog. And now Trump and his surrogates are trying to intimidate the OGE into dropping any inquiries into his clear ethics violations.
Following Trump’s big reveal of how he plans to deal with his many conflicts of interest, the Office of Government Ethics Director, Walter Shaub, made a statement.
“The plan the president-elect has announced doesn’t meet the standards that the best of his nominees are meeting and that every president in the last four decades have met. Stepping back from running his business is meaningless from a conflict of interest perspective.”
This statement caused Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz, Newt Gingrich, and now, Reince Priebus to lash out at the OGE Director.
On Sunday morning Reince Priebus appeared on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos. The incoming Chief of Staff issued a chilling warning to Shaub.
Priebus told Stephanopoulos,
“The head of the government ethics ought to be careful, because that person is becoming extremely political.”
“So I’m not so sure what this person at Government Ethics, what sort of standing he has anymore in giving these opinions.”
