The ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee has some very bad news for Trump. The committee will be investigating any potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the election.
On Monday, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, held a press conference to answer questions about the Russia investigation.
Earlier in the day, another press conference was held by the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes. Nunes claimed that there was no evidence of any members of the Trump campaign having communication with Russia before the election. Of course, the problem with that is the investigation has barely begun. Making a statement like that is at best premature. At worst, it’s a blatant lie.
“As of right now, I don’t have any evidence of any phone calls. It doesn’t mean they don’t exist,” Nunes said. “What I’ve been told by many folks is that there’s nothing there.”
“There is no evidence that I’ve been presented [by the intelligence community] of regular contact with anybody in the Trump campaign.”
But Schiff, who’s on the same committee, had something quite different to say.
Schiff was asked about the possible collusion between team Trump and Russia. He answered,
“I’m saying in our committee as part of our investigation, we have not investigated that yet. That will be investigated. We don’t know the answer. We shouldn’t pre-judge it, and any conversations that Gang of Eight or any others have with IC (Intelligence Community) officials are not the conclusion of our committee. They are not the end point of our investigation. They can’t be.”
Schiff also responded directly to Nunes’ claims. Schiff said neither Nunes nor any other Republican, should be prejudging the conclusions of the investigation. He warned,
“[The committee has] called no witnesses thus far, we have obtained no documents on any counter intelligence investigation and we have yet to receive any testimony from the FBI on the investigation of potential links between the Trump campaign and Russia.”
The bad news for Trump is that these collusion charges are going to be investigated regardless of how many times he and the Republicans try to sweep this under the rug. Despite their best efforts, this story is not going away. The media will not let this go…and clearly neither will the Democrats.
