Without any proof, and likely without any connection to reality, Trump claims that Obama wiretapped him during the election. And once again surrogates are forced to go to the press for clean-up duty. But if this is the best spin they could come up with, Trump is in trouble.
New revelations about Trump’s ties to Russia are coming fast and furious now. But if Trump was trying to change the subject from the Russia investigation this weekend, he failed miserably.
Before dawn on Saturday morning, Trump sent out a series of frantic unhinged tweets accusing President Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower during the election. Of course Trump offered no proof for these outrageous claims. And apparently no one has told him that presidents cannot order wiretaps.
If…and that’s a big IF…Trump Tower was bugged it means that a federal judge believed there was enough evidence to issue a FISA warrant. And if that’s true, it means Trump is really in deep shit.
There are only two options here, and they are both bad. Either Trump is outright lying about something very serious. Or he just told all of us that there was enough probable cause for the courts to issue the surveillance.
So on Sunday, Trump surrogates were paraded out to the Sunday shows to try to defend a paranoid, usually dishonest President.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared on ABC’s This Week and gave her best spin. But if this is the best defense they have for Trump’s behavior, the whole administration is in more trouble than they know.
In the interview, Martha Raddatz pointed out that Trump insisted the wiretapping was “fact” without any proof. Sanders responded,
“The New York Times, the BBC have also talked about and reported on the potential of this having had happened. All we’re saying is let’s take a closer look. Let’s look into this. If this happened, if this is accurate, this is the biggest overreach.”
A frustrated Raddatz interjected,
“If, if, if, if, if! Why is the president saying it did happen?”
Throughout the interview Sanders used a worn out page of the Trump playbook. She took all of the charges that have been fired at Trump and turned them around to attack Obama with the same words. It was just the latest version of “No, you’re the puppet!”
“All we’re asking is we get the same level of look into the Obama administration and the potential that they had for a complete abuse of power that they’ve been claiming that we’ve done over the last six months,” Sanders pleaded. “And time and time again, there’s no evidence or wrongdoing. The FBI says this is B.S. Yes, you guys continue to hammer and hammer of some false idea and false narrative that there’s something there when, frankly, there just isn’t.”
