USDA Rolling Back Michelle Obama’s School Lunch Nutrition Standards

Michelle Obama fought hard for the health of American children. Now the Trump administration is set to destroy all of her hard work. Children’s health be damned.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue is set to announce on Monday a new rule that will allow schools to have more flexibility in meeting federal nutrition standards for school lunches.

One of Michelle Obama’s great accomplishments was her healthy school lunches program. And our children are healthier because of it.

In the 2012-13 school year a new law was implemented in schools across the country with the purpose of reducing childhood obesity and improving nutrition. The new program called for more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat milk products and less sodium and fat in school lunches. It also awarded additional funding to help schools reach the new standards.

But on Monday the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will begin to change all of that.

Sonny Perdue and Republican Senator Pat Roberts will be announcing these changes at the Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg, Virginia Monday afternoon. And then they plan to eat lunch with the children. Thanks to Michelle Obama, and fortunately for the men, they will enjoy a healthy meal.

The American Heart Association has already come out strongly against the Republicans’ efforts. CEO Nancy Brown said that the current standards are working all across the country and 99% of all schools are in compliance with them.

Brown said,

“Improving children’s health should be a top priority for the USDA, and serving more nutritious foods in schools is a clear-cut way to accomplish this goal.”

“Rather than altering the current path forward, we hope the agency focuses more on providing technical assistance that can help schools get across the finish line, if they haven’t done so already.”
