Fox News and right-wing media decided this week that instead of covering all of Trump’s new scandals and chaos, it was way more important to push a strange conspiracy theory that completely fell apart by Tuesday night.
This week’s bombshells about Trump
- He fired FBI Director James Comey
- He admitted that he fired Comey because of the Russia investigation
- He met with known Russian spies in the Oval Office
- He revealed top-secret Israeli intel to the Russian spies
- He banned American press from that meeting with the Russians
- He told Comey to drop the Flynn investigation
Every single one of these is incredibly bad for Donald Trump. And all of them are huge scandals in their own right.
But instead of reporting on these disasters, Fox News and the right-wing media have decided to run with an insane conspiracy theory that they say proves that Trump never colluded with the Russians. Even after their story completely fell apart Tuesday afternoon, people like Sean Hannity continued to push the nonsense.
“On Monday night, Rod Wheeler, a private investigator and Fox News contributor, put things in motion during an interview with WTTG-TV, a Fox affiliate in Washington.Wheeler, who was under contract with the family of Seth Rich, a Democratic National Committee staffer who was fatally shot in July, told WTTG-TV evidence existed that proved Rich had been in contact with Wikileaks before his death.”
For months, right-wing media has been trying to push the absurd unproven theory that Seth Rich was actually the person who gave Wikileaks the DNC emails, not Russia. They also claim that Rich was murdered because of it.
Meanwhile, back here in the real world, Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department says there is no evidence to support these claims.
On Tuesday morning, Fox News went all-in on this story, both on-air and on their website. And they ran with this story instead of covering the latest Trump bombshells.
But by Tuesday afternoon the whole story fell apart.
“Tuesday afternoon, [Fox’s investigator] Wheeler told CNN he had no evidence to suggest Rich had contacted Wikileaks before his death.
Wheeler instead said he only learned about the possible existence of such evidence through the reporter he spoke to for the FoxNews.com story. He explained that the comments he made to WTTG-TV were intended to simply preview Fox News’ Tuesday story. “I only got that [information] from the reporter at Fox News,” Wheeler told CNN.”
And yet, hours later Fox News was still telling their viewers that their story was both real and the biggest scandal in American history.
Sean Hannity said,
“Also tonight, another massive breaking news story. Explosive developments in the mysterious murder of former DNC staffer Seth Rich that could completely shatter the narrative that in fact Wikileaks was working with the Russians, or there was collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. Now, if true, this could become one of the biggest scandals in American history, and could mean that Rich could have been murdered under very suspicious circumstances.”
“And the mystery deepens. Now, let me connect the dots from here. Now, from my perspective, this could be a very huge bombshell story. If this is true, and Seth Rich gave Wikileaks these DNC emails which ultimately led to the firing, remember, Debbie Wasserman Schultz on the eve of the DNC Convention, this blows the whole Russia collusion narrative out of the water. Now, maybe Seth Rich was upset that the DNC was conspiring to hurt Bernie Sanders and help Hillary Clinton when the nomination. We learn from those released emails, remember this, that that was the case.”
