The Iowa Democrat challenging Steve King’s House seat in the 2018 midterm election has dropped out of the race after receiving death threats.
Kim Weaver is an Iowa Democrat who was running against Republican nut-job Steve King in the 2018 midterms. But Saturday night she dropped out of the race after receiving a series of threats on her life.
In a Facebook post on Saturday Weaver said,
“Over the last several weeks, I have been evaluating personal circumstances along with the political climate regarding this campaign. After much deliberation, I have determined that the best decision for me is to withdraw my candidacy for the US House race in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District.
One consideration has been raised again by recent events at my home. Beginning during my 2016 campaign, I have received very alarming acts of intimidation, including death threats. While some may say enduring threats are just a part of running for office, my personal safety has increasingly become a concern.”
Weaver also said that her mother’s health was another consideration in her decision to drop out of the race.
“It’s unclear who will replace Weaver. And while it’s similarly unclear who was threatening Weaver, King is known to have a numerous fans on the white supremacist fringe. After the congressman posted a racist tweet in March endorsing the Dutch right-wing politician Geert Wilders, online white nationalist communities dubbed him “King Steve” and praised him for standing up to “the anti-white establishment.””
After King tweeted in March, “We can’t restore civilization with somebody else’s babies,” he was widely condemned by both Democrats and Republicans. But King defiantly defended the racist tweet, telling reporters that he meant exactly what he said.
Steve King is a vile Republican nut-job and clearly so are his supporters. We really need a good Democratic challenger to fight to take away his seat. But it’s tough to expect any candidate to put up with intimidation and death threats.
This is the new Trump-America that we live in now. And it’s disgusting.
As for King, he basically said that Weaver was lying about the death threats. I guess what else would we expect from this scumbag.
I wanted #KimWeaver IN the race-not out. Democrats drove her out of the race-not R's. Death threats likely didn't happen but a fabrication.
