Trump has put the Boy Scouts in a terrible position because of his disgusting speech at their annual jamboree. Parents across the country are furious. And now the Boy Scouts of America has had to issue an apology because of the President.
On Monday night, Donald Trump joined in a decades-old tradition of a sitting president speaking at the annual Boy Scouts Jamboree. But his speech was anything but traditional.
Unlike presidents of the past, Trump did not talk to the young boys about leadership or patriotism or service or honor or self-respect. He instead gave a highly inappropriate, hyperpartisan speech demonizing President Obama, Hillary Clinton, government, the press, and at least half the country.
The backlash after Trump’s speech was severe. Parents all over the country were irate. So mad in fact that many of them pulled their kids out of Boy Scouts altogether. They also demanded an apology.
On Thursday Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh finally did issue a formal apology.
“We know the past few days have been overshadowed by the remarks offered by the President of the United States.
I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree. That was never our intent. The invitation for the sitting U.S. President to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition that has been extended to the leader of our nation that has had a Jamboree during his term since 1937. It is in no way an endorsement of any person, party or policies. For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.”
The saddest part of this entire situation is what Trump did to these children. It’s good that the Boy Scouts of America apologized. But they shouldn’t have had to apologize for Trump’s disgusting and disgraceful words and behavior.
It’s unfortunate that the kids were put in the middle of the president’s partisan games. But the real apology needs come from Donald Trump. He owes it to the kids. He owes it to the entire nation.
