The Democrats knew what they were doing today when they showed up at the White House. And Trump totally fell for it. He got rolled. And he royally screwed Republicans in the process. Think they’re mad? Oh yeah, they’re mad.
Republicans and Democrats were geared up for a fight over raising the debt ceiling on Wednesday. But they didn’t get much of one thanks to the erratic madman in the White House.
Going into Wednesday’s Oval Office meeting with congressional leaders, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer were calling for a short-term funding bill that would extend the debt limit for three months. Wednesday morning Paul Ryan called the Dem proposal “ridiculous” and “disgraceful.”
Instead, Republicans wanted a much longer extension, hoping to delay the debt ceiling fight until after the midterm elections.
But Trump shocked them when he ignored his own advisers and Republican leaders and quickly sided with the Democrats.
Sarah Ferris from Politico said it went down like this:
How it went down, per source:
-GOP pushed for 18 mo debt limit hike. Then 6 mo
-Dems dismissed 6 mo. Pitched 3 mo
-Trump then agreed to 3 mo

Trump wouldn’t even listen to his own Treasury Secretary on the issue.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin made lengthy argument against Pelosi/Schumer deal but was overruled by Trump in Oval meeting, per sources.

This was a big win for the Dems. And Republicans are pissed. I think that Trump was probably just willing to cave to Pelosi and Schumer on this because he doesn’t want this fight right now. He really wants to clear the tables for tax reform. But by delaying the debt ceiling fight by just three months, he has completely thrown Republicans who are up for reelection under the bus.
Government shutdowns are extremely unpopular. But voters also have extremely short memories. If the GOP were to shut down the government after the next election, it would be forgotten by 2020. But the Republicans will certainly be punished in the midterms if they shut it all down in the heat of the campaign, especially at Christmas time.
That puts Republicans in a really tough spot. Either get punished by voters for shutting the government down. Or be forced to cave again to the Dems with what they want to attach to the bill….like DACA, for example.
