This is a stunning statement about how Senator Corker feels about the President of the United States and this administration.
On Wednesday, Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) told a group of reporters that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary James Mattis, and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly are the only things saving this country from total “chaos.”
Corker was responding to a report that came out Wednesday morning saying that Tillerson called Trump “a fucking moron” after a Pentagon briefing. The report also said that Tillerson was so frustrated that he was on the verge of resigning over the summer.
Corker told reporters that he had no idea if the report was true or not. But he said that he fully supports Tillerson, who he said was in a “frustrating” situation.
“I think Secretary Tillerson, Secretary Mattis and chief of staff Kelly are those people that help separate our country from chaos. And I support him very much, and I don’t know what he may have said after the briefing. I watch, and I see what’s happening, and I deal with people throughout the administration, and he, from my perspective, he is in an incredibly frustrating place, where as I watch, and I can watch very closely on many occasions, he ends up not being supported in a way that I would a hope a [S]ecretary of State would be supported, and that’s just from my vantage point.”
Corker added that Tillerson, Mattis, and Kelly “work well together to make sure that the policies that we put forth around the world are sound and coherent, where other people within the administration, in my belief, are not.”
“I hope they stay because they’re valuable to the national security of our nation,” he said. “They’re valuable to us putting forth good policies. They’re very valuable as it relates to our citizens feeling safe and secure, and I hope he’s here for a long time.”
This is not the first time that Corker has spoken out against Trump and this administration. After Trump’s disgusting comments about white supremacists in Charlottesville, Corker questioned Trump’s “competence” and “stability.”
Corker announced last week that he will be retiring from the Senate at the end of this term. So maybe he feels he has nothing to lose by telling the truth now.
Tillerson said on Wednesday that he wasn’t considering quitting over the summer. But he did not deny calling Trump a moron.
“This is me talking, me talking, but I think sometimes people stay in incredibly frustrating positions … because they feel like they know what it is, what kind of policies they are putting in place,” Corker said. “So I’m thankful that he’s there. I’m thankful that Kelly’s there. I’m thankful that Mattis is there. And I’m thankful that they work together as a team.”
