Donald Trump and his base are determined to go after Hillary Clinton. They are obsessed. And now, even after this story has been debunked, Jeff Sessions has opened an inquiry with the FBI into the Uranium One deal.
Donald Trump and the Republicans have been peddling this bogus Uranium One story since during the election. They are desperate to take the heat off of Trump’s Russia problems, and it’s just another scandal that they’re trying to pin on their favorite villain…Hillary.
It doesn’t matter that the story has been widely debunked, including by Snopes. They are determined to keep repeating the story. And they have their Trump state sponsored TV, Fox News, doing most of the work for them.
Media Matters found that, over a three-week period between October 17 and November 6, Fox spent nearly 12 hours pushing the fake story. And leading the network’s coverage was Sean Hannity, who devoted major segments to Uranium One on every single show during that time period.
Trump and several Republicans have also been demanding that a new investigation be opened into Uranium One. And now it has paid off.
NBC reported on Thursday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has directed Justice Department prosecutors to question the FBI about the Uranium One deal.
“The interviews with FBI agents are part of the Justice Department’s effort to fulfill a promise an assistant attorney general made to Congress last month to examine whether a special counsel was warranted to look into what has become known as the Uranium One deal, a senior Justice Department official said.”
“The senior Justice Department official said the questions were part of an effort by the Sessions team to get up to speed on the controversial case, in the face of allegations from Congressional Republicans that it was mishandled.”
This entire thing is a monumental waste of time and resources. Even Shep Smith at Fox News has debunked this “scandal.”
Last month, Smith presented an honest, clear explanation of the story. It was a huge “f&ck you” to Hannity and his other colleagues who have been insisting that Hillary will go to jail for this. It was a huge “f&ck you” to Trump as well. Smith used Trump’s own words and proved over and over that they were flat-out lies.
“Now, here’s the accusation. Nine people involved in the deal made donations to the Clinton Foundation totaling more than $140 million. In exchange, Secretary of State [Hillary] Clinton approved the sale to the Russians, a quid-pro-quo. The accusation first made by Peter Schweizer, the senior editor-at-large of the website Breitbart in his 2015 book Clinton Cash. The next year, candidate Donald Trump cited the accusation as an example of Clinton corruption.”
“That statement is inaccurate in a number of ways. First, the Clinton State Department had no power to veto or approve that transaction. It could do neither.”
“Further, neither Secretary Clinton nor the committee as a whole could stop any deal of this kind. The committee members evaluate a sale of anything potentially related to national security. By law, if one member objects, the president and only the president can veto such a transaction. No committee member of the nine objected. Federal approvals were also needed. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the sale on November the 24th of 2010 and in doing so, stipulated that no uranium produced may be exported.”
Then Smith broke down the donations that went to the Clinton Foundation supposedly connected to this deal. He showed that the whole premise is a farce.
Then he concluded,
“The accusation is predicated on the charge that Secretary Clinton approved the sale. She did not. A committee of nine evaluated the sale, the president approved the sale, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and others had to offer permits, and none of the uranium was exported for use by the U.S. to Russia. That is Uranium One.”
