Trey Gowdy attacked Elijah Cummings on Wednesday after Cummings went to him with new information about Mike Flynn that he got from a whistleblower.
On Wednesday, Congressional Democrats said that they have new evidence from a confidential whistleblower that Mike Flynn sent messages to his former Russian business partners during Trump’s inauguration telling them that their plan to build nuclear reactors throughout the Middle East was “good to go.”
“Democrats on the House oversight committee said in a letter dated Wednesday that the whistleblower reported attending an inauguration day event with Flynn’s former business associate Alex Copson, the managing partner of ACU Strategic Partners.”
“The whistleblower said Copson gushed that Trump’s inauguration was “the best day of my life” because it meant his company’s effort to create a U.S.-Russia energy partnership in the Middle East, which reportedly would have included more than two dozen nuclear plants in the region, was moving forward. Copson said Flynn was making sure Obama-era sanctions, which he claimed threatened the nuclear project, would be “ripped up,” according to the whistleblower.”
Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said in a letter to Republican Trey Gowdy on Wednesday,
“Our committee has credible allegations that President Trump’s National Security Advisor sought to manipulate the course of international nuclear policy for the financial gain of his former business partners. These grave allegations compel a full, credible, and bipartisan congressional investigation.”
Cummings said that the whistleblower came to the committee back in June. But the Mueller investigation asked him to “hold on the public release of this information until they completed certain investigative steps.”
Cummings told Gowdy that the whistleblower was “authentic, credible, and reliable.” But he added that the whistleblower “still fears retaliation” but felt “duty bound as a citizen to make this disclosure.” Cummings also said that the whistleblower was willing to meet with Gowdy as long as he kept his identity secret.
Gowdy was rabid going after Hillary Clinton about the Benghazi attack. But he’s apparently not interested in getting to the bottom of Trump’s collusion with Russia.
Gowdy told Cummings to take his new evidence to Bob Mueller. And he made it clear that he wasn’t interested in investigating further.
In a rude letter back to Cummings, Gowdy said,
“As for your continued obsession with the Select Committee on Benghazi, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s investigation began as a direct result of the Committee’s work which led to the discovery of the email server. The Committee held no hearings on the matter and interviewed no witnesses other than to determine whether the Committee had all relevant information. Perhaps your memory is poor because you spent two years obstructing, delaying, and obfuscating the investigation. If it had been up to you, the server would still be a mystery.”
He added,
“While you may want every Committee of Congress to investigate the same fact patterns, it isn’t a prudent use of resources- something you used to be mindful of.”
Cummings also released an 11-page memo on Wednesday pointing out Gowdy’s hypocrisy. The memo highlights all of the times that Gowdy pursued investigations that ran parallel with separate criminal investigations.
