Watch Senator Cory Booker explode on Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen when she refuses to answer questions about Trump’s racist comments.
On Tuesday, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. And it didn’t go well.
On Sunday, Nielsen had gone on Fox News and said that she didn’t remember Donald Trump saying that African and Latino nations were “shitholes” in Thursday’s Oval Office meeting about immigration. And her memory didn’t get any clearer when she testified on Tuesday.
Nielsen, who was in the room for the immigration meeting last week along with Trump and several members of Congress, told the Senate Judiciary Committee that she didn’t remember Trump using the racist and vulgar language that has been reported. And she said that with two Senators, Durbin and Graham, sitting there who were also in that meeting. They knew she was lying. And so did everyone else on the committee.
Cory Booker was particularly upset about Nielsen’s non-answers. He said to her,
“When ignorance and bigotry is allied with power, it’s a dangerous force in our country. Your silence and your amnesia is complicity!”
He added, “I receive enough death threats to know the reality.”
Nielsen did finally admit that it was “possible” that Trump made the racist remarks.
“It was a meeting of 12 people. There was cross-talk,” Nielsen told the committee. “Anything is possible. I can’t testify to what I don’t know.”
