This is a worst nightmare scenario for Republicans. Barack Obama is coming back to politics!
Republicans were already facing a serious uphill battle to hold on to power in the midterms. And Obama just made that battle a whole lot harder.
Since Trump was elected, President Obama has been mostly quiet. He’s spoken out a couple of times to defend Obamacare and the Dreamers. But, for the most part, he’s stayed below the radar. Well, that’s all about to change.
Obama is planning on returning to the political stage this year to fight for Democrats in the midterm elections. And he will likely play a significant role. But for now his exact plan is still under wraps.
“He’ll “continue to be politically active in 2018, with more endorsements and more campaigning,” his spokeswoman Katie Hill said. Still, he won’t maintain such a high profile, lest he risk taking political oxygen away from Democrats in a critical election year, associates said.”
Obama’s former top strategist, David Axelrod, said that after a year away from the White House Obama is feeling “liberated.”
“He must feel 100 pounds lighter,” Axelrod said. “He is still deeply concerned about the world, and the things that always concerned him, but there’s something to be said about not having those red phones around him, metaphorically speaking.”
In September, Obama told Prince Harry, “I’m really obsessed now with training the next generation of leaders to make their mark on the world.”
Obama’s former Education Secretary, Arne Duncan, says that Obama told him last year that he believes that his actions now working with Democrats will be far more impactful than his eight years as president.
“If he can really help train a generation of not hundreds, but thousands of leaders, not just domestically but internationally,” Duncan said, “you think about the ripple effect not just over the next 25 years, but over the next 50 years.”
While Donald Trump is suffering with historically low approval ratings, President Obama has only gotten more popular since he left office. Obama now has a 63% approval rating. Even in ruby-red Alabama, Obama is more popular than Trump.
So, the fact that Obama is returning to the campaign trail should scare the hell out of Republicans. Obama will surely further fire up an already energized Democratic base.
Welcome back Obama! Give ’em hell!
