This clip is cringeworthy. Steve Mnuchin really has no clue what he or Trump are doing. You know it’s bad when even Fox News is calling it out.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin had an epic fail on Sunday when he appeared on Fox News with Chris Wallace. The Fox host was forced to give the clueless Mnuchin a lesson in civics. Though I still don’t think he gets it.
During his interview on Fox News Sunday, Mnuchin complained about the omnibus spending bill that Trump signed last week. Mnuchin was upset that the Democrats had gotten so much domestic spending included in the bill. And he repeated Trump’s unconstitutional request for a “line item veto.”
Mnuchin said to Wallace, “I think they should give the president a line-item veto.”
“That was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court,” Wallace shot back.
“Well again, Congress could pass a rule, okay, that allows them to do it,” Mnuchin replied.
“No, no,” Wallace interrupted. “It would have to be a constitutional amendment.”
OK, so first of all, Mnuchin is absolutely wrong. Congress can’t just “pass a rule” to allow Trump to violate the constitution. Line item vetos were ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1998. And to change that, Wallace was correct, it would take a constitutional amendment. And that would require approval of 2/3 of both houses of Congress and 3/4 of all of the states.
Yet, even when confronted with the facts, Mnuchin continued to push back. He accused the Fox host of trying to “get into a debate.”
Then Mnuchin totally ignored what Wallace had just told him and said,
“There’s different ways of doing this,” he insisted, quickly changing the subject. “My comment is, it’s clear what happened. The Democrats, in order to get us military spending, demanded a massive increase in non-military spending. And the president made the decision this time that that was worth it because military spending, given what’s going on in Iran, in North Korea, in Venezuela, in Russia — all around the world where we’re using sanctions. We need to make sure we have a military that has the necessary resources.”
Unfortunately, Wallace let him off the hook after that. He thanked him for being there and for answering all of his questions.
But the damage was done. It was clear in this cringeworthy segment that the Trump administration has absolutely no regard for the rule of law. They don’t even know what the law is.
