Evangelicals are bending over backwards to defend the indefensible from Trump. They should just be honest and admit that they’re huge hypocrites who held President Obama to a completely different standard than Donald Trump.
One of Trump’s favorite evangelical advisers, Pastor Robert Jeffress, is apparently just fine with the president cheating on his wife with porn stars. Paying hush money to one of the porn stars doesn’t bother the pastor either.
Just to put this into some context here, Jeffress used to refer to Obama as the “Antichrist.” Trump, however, he calls “the great president.”
Robert Jeffress is a Southern Baptist pastor who leads the First Baptist Church in Dallas. And he serves on Trump’s evangelical advisory board.
On Thursday night, Jeffress made an appearance on Fox News to discuss the latest developments in the Stormy Daniels case. When the Fox host told Jeffress that many people are calling evangelicals hypocrites because of their defense of Trump, Jeffress replied that the hypocrite accusations were “absolutely ludicrous.” He added that “evangelicals know they are not compromising their beliefs in order to support this great president.”
“And let’s be clear — Evangelicals still believe in the commandment: Thou shalt not have sex with a porn star. However, whether this president violated that commandment or not is totally irrelevant to our support of him.”
Jeffress also repeated a common refrain from evangelicals saying that they “knew they weren’t voting for an altar boy when they voted for Donald Trump.” And he added that evangelicals understand the concept of sin and forgiveness.
“We are all sinners, we all need forgiveness, [and] that forgiveness is available through Christ for anyone who asks,” he said. “And whether the president needs that forgiveness for this particular allegation, whether he’s asked for it, is between him, his family and his god.”
The problem, of course, is that Trump has not asked for forgiveness. He’s refusing to even admit that he did anything wrong. And he continues to lie about all of the affairs he’s had.
During the Fox segment Thursday night, Juan Williams pointed out the fact that voters never had the opportunity to know about Trump’s infidelity with porn stars because he paid $130,000 in hush money to Stormy Daniels before the election. Williams also pointed out that Sarah Huckabee Sanders accidentally acknowledged that Trump was involved with the Daniels case earlier this week.
But Jeffress didn’t care.
“Even if it’s proven to be true, it doesn’t matter because of what I just said,” Jeffress said. “And Juan, listen — a blue dress was not enough to turn you into a red Republican, and I believe anything Stormy Daniels has will not be enough to turn red Republicans into blue Democrats. This is about the policies and issues.”
“Pastor, you cannot sell your integrity, your Christians values, and say, ‘because President Trump is anti-abortion, I’ll support him no matter what. What happened to the principles, what happened to your love of people of character?”
