This was all about Trump’s obsession with destroying everything Obama did. But once again, he’s being blocked by the courts. Sorry Trump, you lose!
On Wednesday, the Hill reported,
“A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from cutting short grants awarded to Planned Parenthood through a federal teen pregnancy prevention program.”
On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Thomas Rice issued a permanent injunction which stops the Trump administration from ending the grants two years earlier than they were originally scheduled. The judge said that ending these grants would cause public harm.
Rice said,
“The Court determines that the public interest weighs in favor of Plaintiffs, as it would prevent harm to the community … and prevent loss of data regarding the effectiveness of teen pregnancy prevention.”
The grants were originally set to run through 2020, but Trump decided to end them in 2018 instead, claiming that they were ineffective. I suspect that the real reason he tried to kill this program is because it’s an Obama accomplishment.
Planned Parenthood sued the administration last summer after it ended Teen Pregnancy Prevention grants for 81 organizations across the country.
The program, which was created by Obama, funded organizations that worked to prevent teen pregnancy. The program focused mostly on comprehensive sex ed which included both contraception and abstinence teaching.
This new court ruling means that the Trump administration will have to continue with its agreement with Planned Parenthood.
“The courts confirmed that the Trump-Pence administration’s attempt to impose its ideological agenda on young people is unlawful,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
“Planned Parenthood applauds the court’s decision and is proud to continue to serve Americans in the TPPP, along with our partners.”
