This Republican is all cool with killing women because he values life so much….or something.
On Tuesday, the Associated Press reported that a Republican candidate for Idaho’s lieutenant governor said that women who have abortions should face punishment, including the death penalty.
At a candidate forum hosted by conservative Christian podcast CrossPolitic on Monday in Moscow, Idaho, state Senator Bob Nonini said that he believed that women should be penalized if he can get abortion criminalized in the state. When he was asked if he supported the death penalty as a punishment for abortion, Nonini nodded his head yes.
And Nonini isn’t just some crackpot off the street making these outrageous claims. He’s an established Republican who has already served three terms in the Idaho Senate.
The Senator was joined at the forum by two other Republican candidates, businesswoman Janice McGeachin and former Idaho Republican Party Chairman Steve Yates.
All three of the candidates agreed that abortion was murder. But McGeachin and Yates did not agree with Nonini that women should be charged with first degree murder if they have an abortion.
Idaho previously tried to ban abortion after 20 weeks. But the law was ruled unconstitutional by a federal court in 2015.
After taking a lot of heat all day on Tuesday Nonini is backtracking. Now he says that he still wants to punish the women but he doesn’t think they should get the death penalty. The AP stands by their original reporting.
