This Parkland Chemistry teacher volunteered to carry a gun at the school following the shooting that left 17 dead. Then he left his loaded 9mm in a public bathroom stall.
It is a really f*cking stupid idea to arm teachers. This story is a very good example of why.
On Wednesday, the Miami Herald reported that a loaded Glock 9mm gun was left in a men’s room at the Deerfield Beach Pier on Sunday.
“According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the weapon was left by Sean Simpson. If his name sounds familiar, he’s the teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas who said he’d be willing to arm himself while on duty.”
“According to the sheriff’s office report, Simpson told deputies he’d left his gun by accident. By the time the chemistry teacher realized his mistake, the Glock was already in the hands of a drunk homeless man who had picked it up and fired. The bullet hit a wall.”
Simpson was able to wrestle the gun away from the drunk homeless man. Both men were later arrested.
Simpson was charged with a second-degree misdemeanor for failing to safely store a firearm. And the homeless man was charged with firing a weapon while intoxicated and trespassing.
WPLG reported on Wednesday that the Broward County School Board has decided not to take any disciplinary action against the teacher.
It is fortunate that this story didn’t have a more tragic ending. Just imagine what could’ve happened if he had left his loaded gun in the bathroom at school.
On Tuesday, the Broward County School Board voted unanimously to NOT participate in the state’s new program for arming teachers.
