Melania says she wants to help kids. Meanwhile, her husband just sent a plan to Congress to cut $15 billion out of programs that actually do help kids – like the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
On Monday, Melania Trump revealed her new platform “Be Best.” She says she wants to focus on helping children, including with cyberbullying. My advice to her would be to start with her own dick of a husband, who is by far the worst bully in this country. The whole idea of helping kids seems completely divorced from the president’s agenda.
The Washington Post reported on Monday,
“President Trump is sending a plan to Congress that calls for stripping more than $15 billion in previously approved spending, with the hope that it will temper conservative angst over ballooning budget deficits.
Almost half of the proposed cuts would come from two accounts within the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that White House officials said expired last year or are not expected to be drawn upon. An additional $800 million in cuts would come from money created by the Affordable Care Act in 2010.”
Trump is trying to get Congress to use a process called “rescission” which takes back money that was previously authorized. He wants them to use rescission on more than 30 programs. Congress will have 45 days to vote on Trump’s plan or a scaled-back version of it. They can pass it with a simple majority.
Republicans are saying that they have been given assurances from the White House that this is the first of several rescission plans to make up for the all of the money they spent with their tax scam.
“The proposed cuts to CHIP would come in part from cutting $5 billion from the Children’s Health Insurance Fund, to help reimburse states for certain expenses.”
The White House is arguing that this money can’t be legally used anyway. And this White House never lies or anything, so I’m sure they’re totally right.
“The White House’s other proposed cut to CHIP is a $2 billion reduction [that] would pare back the Child Enrollment Contingency Fund, meant to ensure states have access to funds if there is a higher-than-expected enrollment, the senior administration official said.”
The White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney originally wanted a much larger rescission package. But House Speaker Paul Ryan convinced him to start with this smaller plan first and then follow up with more cuts in future packages.
This is a bait and switch by the Republicans. They are literally taking money away from the poorest Americans and children and giving it to the wealthiest Americans in the form of their tax scam.
These programs they are taking money from are helping poor families. While they hand over buckets of cash to the wealthy they are leaving poor children suffering. But hey, great speech today Melania. Sure, kids are going to lose healthcare, but at least they can look to the First Lady for lessons on bullying.
