Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro says that he saw an 8-month-old infant in the detention facility he toured in Texas. The baby has been separated from his parents for weeks.
On Monday, Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX-D) gave an absolutely heartbreaking report about what he saw when he toured an immigration detention facility in Texas.
Castro visited a center in Brownsville, Texas. And he says that he was shocked to see how young some of the children were. Castro also reports that these children have been there, separated from their parents, for weeks now.
“The youngest child (boy) I’ve seen here so far who was separated from his family is 8 months old and has been here over a month, according to administrators,” Castro tweeted.

The outraged Congressman also said that there were other babies being held away from their parents in a so-called “infant room.”
We visited the Infant Room where four very young children, including Roger the 8 month old, were being looked after by staff. We picked up and carried the children. #FamiliesBelongTogether

The president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Colleen Kraft, told CNN on Monday that the Trump administration’s policy of ripping children away from their parents at the border amounts to “child abuse.” Dr. Kraft says that treating children this way “disrupts their brain architecture and keeps them from developing language and social emotional bonds.”
