Domino’s Pizza Is Doing What Trump And The Republicans Won’t

The roads in this country are in bad shape. But Trump and the Republicans have said that they won’t touch infrastructure this year. So Domino’s Pizza has decided to do something about it.

Domino’s Pizza announced on Monday that they will be filling potholes in towns across the country with their new “Paving for Pizza” initiative. The pizza chain says that they will help “smooth the ride home” for their customers and delivery drivers.

In a statement on Monday, Domino’s said,

“Domino’s Pizza, the largest pizza company in the world based on global retail sales, is saving pizza, one pothole at a time. Cracks, bumps, potholes and other road conditions can put good pizzas at risk after they leave the store. Now Domino’s is hoping to help smooth the ride home for our freshly-made pizzas. Starting today, Domino’s is asking customers to nominate their town for pothole repairs at pavingforpizza.com.

According to their website,

“Potholes, cracks, and bumps in the road can cause irreversible damage to your pizza during the drive home from Domino’s. We can’t stand by and let your cheese slide to one side, your toppings get un-topped, or your boxes get flipped. So we’re helping pave in towns across the country to save your pizza from these bad roads.”

Domino’s announced their new initiative on Monday but they have already repaired roads in four U.S. cities:

  1. Bartonville, Texas
  2. Milford, Delaware
  3. Athens, Georgia
  4. Burbank, California

Milford’s city manager, Eric Norenberg, said, “Facing an already harsher winter than usual for Delaware, this is an opportunity to get additional money to stretch our city’s limited resources.”

In Texas, where 3 roads were fixed in just 8 hours, Bartonville administrator Michael Montgomery said that he was “ecstatic.” And he added that he “didn’t think it was possible, but Domino’s delivered on their promise” in his city.

Donald Trump promised on the campaign trail that he would do a major infrastructure overhaul. But, like much of what Trump says, these appear to be just more empty words. In March, he was supposed to reveal his big plan to fix roads and bridges and railways and airports. But that never happened. The White House admits now that nothing will be done on infrastructure before the midterms. So, despite Trump’s big promises, nothing will be done this year.

In fact, in April, White House infrastructure policy adviser D.J. Gribbin left the administration. And there has been no replacement announced.

Even if Trump manages to get to infrastructure before he’s either impeached or voted out, his plan is terrible. Trump wants the federal government to put up $200 billion over the next 10 years in grants and other incentives which he believes will attract a total of $1.5 trillion for the project.

According to CNBC analysts Trump’s big $1.5 trillion plan comes at least a trillion dollars short.

Others believe that Trump’s numbers are off even further. The American Society of Civil Engineers says that our current infrastructure system is graded at a D-. And they estimate that it will actually cost more like $4.6 trillion over 10 years to fix it.

So all those potholes in your town? Don’t expect Trump or the Republicans to do anything anytime soon to fix them. But, in the meantime, Domino’s is doing their part to help. I’m thanking them by ordering a pineapple and ham pizza for dinner. Thanks Domino’s!
