This Democrat running in ruby-red Texas is a longshot to win her race. But her incredible new campaign ad has gone viral and given her a big boost and new hopes.
In her brilliant new campaign ad, Mary Jennings “MJ” Hager introduces herself as an Air Force combat veteran and a mother. Hager won a Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross for her bravery in Afghanistan. And now she is running for a seat in Texas’ 31st district, which has been held by eight-term Republican John Carter.
Hager is a progressive Dem, so she faces an uphill battle to win this ruby-red seat. But, with this new ad, she’s off to a great start.
Hager’s ad titled, “Doors” was released last Wednesday. And it has already had nearly 2 million views on YouTube.
In the ad, Hager shows the many doors that she has gone through in her life. She says that she has spent her life “opening, pushing, and sometimes kicking through every door in my way.”
Hager talks about overcoming challenges in her life, starting with her mother’s decision to “walk out the door” of an abusive relationship with her father. She also talks about the discrimination that she faced as a female pilot and all of the doors that were closed in her face.
“One of those closed doors was my congressman, Tea Party Republican John Carter,” she says. “Apparently being his constituent, and a veteran, wasn’t enough to get a meeting. I guess I also needed to be a donor.”
Hager has also written a book about her time in the military titled, “Shoot Like a Girl: One Woman’s Dramatic Fight in Afghanistan and on the Home Front.” The book is now being made into a movie with Angelina Jolie starring as Hager.
