Watch DNI Dan Coats’ shocked response after hearing the breaking news that Trump just invited Putin to the White House. His reaction is priceless.
On Monday, Donald Trump held a summit with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. And it was a complete disaster.
Trump looked terrified of Putin. And he stunned the world when he took Russia’s side over his own intelligence community when talking about Russia’s interference in our 2016 presidential election. Trump also again said that the hacking could’ve been anyone.
Following Trump’s disastrous performance on Monday, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats put out a statement without White House approval. Coats said,
“We have been clear in our assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy, and we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective evidence in support of our national security.”
On Thursday, Coats spoke out again in an interview with NBC’s Andrea Mitchell.
“It is undeniable that the Russians are taking the lead on” election meddling, Coats told Mitchell in Aspen, Colorado. “They are the ones trying to undermine our basic values. … We need to call them out on that. It is critical that we do so.”
But the funniest moment of Coats interview came after Mitchell read the breaking news that Trump had just directed John Bolton to invite Putin to the White House later this fall. Knowing how frustrated he has to be working for Trump at this point, his reaction to the news was priceless.
Coats still has no idea what was said during Trump and Putin’s closed door meeting in Helsinki. And he clearly had no idea that another meeting with Putin was already being scheduled. Did I mention that he’s the Director of National Intelligence?
Mitchell said to Coats and the audience, “The White House has just announced on Twitter that Vladimir Putin is coming to the White House in the fall.”
“Say that again?!” Coats responded to laughter from Mitchell and the audience.
Mitchell repeated, “Vladimir Putin is coming to the White House.”
Coats asked, “Did I hear that right??”
“Yeah,” Mitchell says.
Coats replied, “Whh- OK.” Then he added, “That’s gonna be special.”
Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats informed on stage at Aspen Security Forum that the Trump administration has invited Vladimir Putin to the White House.
