Now that we are finding out that Trump did in fact know about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting ahead of time, Republicans are having to change their strategy of defending the president. Now they’re admitting that Trump probably did know. But they just don’t care.
Donald Trump has said repeatedly claimed that he had no knowledge of a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower between Don Jr., Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, and Russians who promised dirt on Hillary. Don Jr. also testified before Congress that he never told his dad about the meeting. But now, Michael Cohen is saying that Trump did in fact know about it ahead of time and actually approved the meeting.
On Saturday, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) tried to downplay the whole scandal saying that “nobody’s going to be surprised” to find out that Trump lied.
Fox’s Neil Cavuto pressed Issa about whether Trump could face legal consequences if it is proven that he did approve the now infamous meeting with Russians who claimed the Kremlin wanted to help Trump win the presidency.
“If he’s proven to have not told the whole truth about the fact that campaigns look for dirt, and if someone offers it, you listen to them, nobody’s going to be surprised,” Issa told Cavuto. “There are some things in politics that you just take for granted.”
“You don’t think this has any long-term impact?” Cavuto pressed. “He wouldn’t be the first politician, or president for that matter, to maybe just misrepresent things?”
“Businessmen listen to almost everyone who might be helpful, and by the way, they make pragmatic decisions about how to make bad stories go away,” Issa replied.
Issa also attacked Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen for betraying Trump by secretly recording him.
“A turncoat lawyer, a lawyer who deserves to be disbarred for a number of his actions including recording his client clandestinely, makes a much better story than ‘Businessman Makes America Great Again,’ ” Issa told Cavuto.
Issa is a good representation of Trump’s supporters in Congress. And, clearly, they have decided that they simply don’t care that Trump, at the very least, tried to work with the Russian government to win an election. They also don’t care that he’s repeatedly lied about it.
