Over a million people have donated money to RAICES to help separated migrant families at the border. They’ve now raised $20 million. And they plan to take that money to Washington DC and demand that migrant mothers immediately be released on bond.
Now this is some great news!
On Tuesday, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) announced that they have raised over $20 million to help migrant mothers who have been detained at the border and separated from their children.
In a statement, RAICES said, “Bonds often cost between $5 -10,000 so our $20m can pay approximately 2,500 in one go.”
Approximately 3,000 children have been separated from their parents at the border this year. And the Trump administration is having a very hard time reuniting those families. They were directed by the court to return over a hundred children under the age of five by Tuesday. But they only managed to reunite around half of them.
The Texas nonprofit said, “By offering this bond payment, RAICES hopes to help the administration comply with its court ordered obligations.”
RAICES offers free and low-cost legal services to immigrants and refugees. And they say that more than a million people around the world have donated to them in response to Trump’s horrific zero tolerance policy.
RAICES says that they will use the money for legal services and reunification efforts for immigrant families. They will also start a “hiring spree” and create a reunification fund to partner with other organizations.
