Imagine having just lost a family member to a violent murder and then imagine having to argue with opportunistic conservatives trying to use the death to score cheap political points.
On Tuesday, Iowa police arrested Christian Rivera, age 24, for the murder of Mollie Tibbetts who went missing a month ago while jogging. Donald Trump and his supporters were quick to try to turn Mollie’s death into political points because Rivera was initially reported to be an undocumented immigrant.
On Wednesday, the Des Moines Register reported that in court documents Rivera’s lawyer said that he was in the country legally. That blows Trump’s whole plan to use this murder to paint all illegal immigrants as violent criminals. But, of course, that’s not stopping the president and his supporters from continuing their divisive rhetoric.
This is what the White House tweeted out the day after Rivera’s arrest:
For 34 days, investigators searched for 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts. Yesterday, an illegal alien, now charged with first-degree murder, led police to the cornfield where her body was found.

But the Tibbetts family had a very different tone in their statements. Mollie’s aunt posted on Facebook Tuesday night, “Please remember, Evil comes in EVERY color. Our family has been blessed to be surrounded by love, friendship and support throughout this entire ordeal by friends from all different nations and races. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”
But despite the family’s wishes Trump and his supporters continue making Mollie’s death political. Right-wing pundit Candace Owens badgered Mollie’s cousin on Twitter for not agreeing with the White House spin about the murder.
It’s absolutely disgusting that Owens would argue with grieving family members to score points for Trump. Mollie’s cousin is right. It IS despicable that Trump and his supporters are using her death to push a hateful political agenda. Just disgusting. And sadly, predictable.
