This is the best thing you’ll see all day. Seriously.
Members of Congress have found many creative ways over the years to shut down protesters at their committee hearings. But I think that this takes the cake.
On Wednesday, things got a little weird at the House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing with Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey.
In the middle of the hearing, alt-right activist Laura Loomer stood up and started shouting about conservatives being silenced on social media. Loomer shouted that Twitter and Facebook were trying to steal the midterm elections by censoring conservatives.
“Please help us, Mr. President, before it is too late, because Jack Dorsey is trying to influence the election, to sway the election, so that Democrats can steal the election!” she said. “That is why he is censoring and shadow-banning conservatives!”
The Congressmen and women in the room paused the hearing as Loomer shouted, and then Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) did something amazing.
After a call to order, Long spoke up and said,
“Eh? What’s she saying? I can’t understand her.”
And then he broke into an auctioneer’s chant, talking over her as if he were selling a piece of antique furniture.
Once Loomer was taken out of the room, Billy Long said, “I yield back.” And the room erupted into laughter.
Vox reports of Long,
“It turns out that Long, a Republican who has been in the House since 2011 representing Missouri’s Seventh District, is actually a professional auctioneer. According to his congressional website, the former real-estate broker is the owner of Billy Long Auctions in Springfield. He’s a member of the National Auctioneers Association and the Missouri Professional Auctioneers’ Hall of Fame.”
Things were weird in Washington DC on Wednesday. But this was awesome!
