Kenan Thompson told Seth Meyers Monday night that over the weekend, following the season premier of Saturday Night Live, musical guest Kanye pulled the entire cast onto the stage and “held them hostage” while he went into an off-camera rant about how great Trump is.
I’m so glad that SNL didn’t air this. It was weird enough when Kanye performed his first song dressed up like a Perrier bottle. (Yes, he really did.) The last thing I want to hear is Kanye West tell me how much he loves Donald Trump. And it looks like the cast of SNL felt the same way Saturday night.
On Monday night, SNL cast member Kenan Thompson made an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. And he told the story of how Kanye held the cast hostage for his bizarre post-show rant about Trump.
“We’re all entitled to our opinions,” Thompson said. “I don’t know if that’s the moment, necessarily, to hold people hostage like that, but hey.”
Thompson said that he was not on stage when Kanye pulled his stunt. Thompson recognized that something screwed up was about to happen. So he went off stage to watch it go down on-screen.
“As soon as he said, ‘Hey, join me up on stage, everybody,’ I was like, ‘Oh, there goes the little cheese in the mousetrap; it’s going down,’” Thompson said.
During part of his non-televised speech, Kanye said, “It’s so many times that I talk to a white person about this, and they say, ‘How could you support Trump? He’s racist.’ Well if I was concerned about racism, I would have moved out of America a long time ago.”
“We don’t just make our decisions off of racism. I’ma break it down to you right now: If someone inspires me and I connect with them, I don’t have to believe in all they policies,” he continued.
“I felt so bad for those guys,” Thompson said. “Because it’s hard to stand there and not be able to debate somebody who’s going so far against your personal opinion.”
