Trump appears to be overcome with panic in light of last week’s round of bombshells regarding Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s continued investigation of Russian tampering in the 2016 election and possible collusion by Team Trump.

Let’s begin by getting to the heart of the matter – Trump’s Wednesday morning Twitter-Tantrum, followed by analysis by Abramson along with some background regarding why Trump appears to be so panicked.

Trump’s Wednesday morning Twitter-tantrum

Trump’s first tweet of the day targeted Mueller – a common theme this week.

“While the disgusting Fake News is doing everything within their power not to report it that way, at least 3 major players are intimating that the Angry Mueller Gang of Dems is viciously telling witnesses to lie about facts & they will get relief. This is our Joseph McCarthy Era!” he tweeted.

Abramson responded by ranking Trump’s level “9 Manaforts (out of 10).”

Incredulously, Trump went on a retweet binge to include a meme stating: “Now that Russia collusion is a proven lie, when do the trials for treason begin.”

Abramson weighed in, providing a list of the individuals depicted in the meme and tweeting: “TRUMP RTed this pic. So he wants these people ‘tried for treason.”

  • Rosenstein, Deputy AG
  • Mueller, former FBI Director
  • Comey, former FBI Director
  • Holder, former AG
  • Lynch, former AG
  • Obama, former POTUS
  • Clinton, former POTUS
  • Clinton, former SoS
  • Clapper, former DNI

Continuing, Abramson drove his point home, writing that Trump’s tweet was “the act of a scary tyrant.”

Keep in mind that Treason is a death penalty-eligible offense, and that it is not something one jokes about on social media or elsewhere. And to joke about it when you are the head of the Executive Branch that could initiate a Treason prosecution is the act of a scary tyrant.

Why Trump appears to be so panicked

As per The New York Times, “Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, repeatedly lied to federal investigators in breach of a plea agreement he signed two months ago, the special counsel’s office said in a court filing late on Monday.”

As CNN reported, this appears to be “a subtle but powerful show of strength” by Mueller.

On the surface, Manafort’s failed cooperation appears to be a setback for Mueller and a bullet dodged for President Donald Trump and administration insiders. But Mueller’s ability to see through Manafort’s lies and rip up the cooperation agreement bespeaks a deeper strength. By Monday’s court filing, Mueller effectively declared: I have enough evidence to know Manafort is lying to protect others, and I don’t need his half-baked cooperation to prove my case against them.

[…]

The very fact that Mueller saw through Manafort’s lies — and appears ready to prove to Manafort’s sentencing judge that Manafort lied — is a subtle but powerful show of strength.

[…]

Here, we know Mueller has the goods on whatever Manafort lied about — and whoever Manafort felt a need to protect — because he told the judge that he “will file a detailed sentencing submission to the Probation Department and the Court in advance of sentencing that sets forth the nature of the defendant’s crimes and lies, including those after signing the plea agreement.” Translation: Manafort lied, I know it, and I’ll prove it at his sentencing if necessary. That should cause serious concern to whoever Manafort sought to protect by lying to federal prosecutors during his proffers.

For those unfamiliar with his work, Abramson has been publishing extensive Twitter threads and mega-threads regarding the ongoing investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Abramson – a former public defender at both the state and federal level – has an impressive online bio.
