Sometimes it’s hard to tell if Trump is just trolling us or if he really is as deranged and ignorant as he appears to be. Over the weekend at one of his superspreader rallies, the president told the crowd that if he wins in November, he’s going to “negotiate” so that he can run again in 2024 for a third term.
Bill Maher has been saying for over a year that Trump wouldn’t leave office peacefully. Comments like this make Maher’s idea seem that much more credible.
Trump claims that he is “entitled” to a third term because Obama spied on his campaign in 2016. He has absolutely no consideration of the law or the constitution.
The 22nd Amendment Says Not So Fast.
He is a dictator wannabe. But the 22nd amendment, ratified in 1951, states that presidents may not serve more than two terms.
It really doesn’t matter what bullshit Trump feeds his idiotic fans; he’s not getting a third term. We are still a nation with laws, and they apply even to moron narcissists.
The thing he’s not telling his supporters is that it would be next to impossible to change the law and allow him an additional four years. To change the constitutional amendment, he would have to get the votes from two-thirds of both houses of Congress or get two-thirds of the states to call for a constitutional convention. None of that is going to happen.
But still, it’s pretty alarming to hear an American president talk like that.
Maybe instead of fantasizing and getting his fans all excited about a third term that will never happen, he should worry a little more about winning a second term. According to the Real Clear Politics average of polls, Trump is losing nationally to Joe Biden by more than seven points.
