In a joint press conference on Monday, French President Macron told Putin to his face that Russia Today and Sputnik are Russian propaganda organs that push fake news. Donald Trump could learn a few lessons from Macron.
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin went to France to meet with newly-elected French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles. And Macron didn’t give one inch.
Macron said he had an “extremely frank, direct” conversation with Putin, which included pushing for cooperation on Syria and terrorism and an extraordinary attack on two state-funded Russian media outlets. Macron told Putin that Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik are spreading “lying propaganda.”
Macron is furious that Putin tried to interfere in French elections the same way he interfered in the U.S. election last year.
“When press outlets spread defamatory untruths, they are no longer journalists, they are organs of influence. Russia Today and Sputnik were organs of influence during this campaign, which, on several occasions produced untruths about me and my campaign.”
“I will not give an inch on this,” he said. “Russia Today and Sputnik … behaved as organs of influence, of propaganda, of lying propaganda.”
Putin denied any interference in the elections. And he defended his relationship with Macron’s far-right opponent Marine Le Pen, with whom he is still in contact.
Following the intense meeting, Macron told reporters, “We have disagreements, but at least we talked about them.”
This is how a real leader deals with Putin. This is how you deal with bullies. You stand up to them. You call them on their bullshit. What a stark difference from how our traitorous Russian puppet behaves.
