This pissed off basketball coach just totally went off on Donald Trump. And it was awesome!
On Monday, the future Hall of Fame coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich, spoke to a writer at the Nation about Donald Trump. Coach Pop was furious and he wanted to make a statement on the record.
Dave Zirin at the Nation said, “I have never heard this man more frustrated, more fed up, and more tense with anger than he was today.”
The coach was upset about comments that Trump made in a press conference on Monday about Barack Obama. Trump was trying to defend himself over criticisms that he hadn’t mentioned or called the families of four Green Berets who were ambushed and killed two weeks ago in Niger. But, in typical Trump fashion, instead of taking responsibility for his own actions, or lack thereof, he spewed an outrageous lie about President Obama, saying his predecessor never called the families of fallen soldiers.
Trump said, “President Obama and other presidents, most of them didn’t make calls, a lot of them didn’t make calls. I like to call when it’s appropriate, when I think I’m able to do it.”
Maybe because of his own history in the military, or maybe just because he’s totally fed up with Trump’s lies, Coach Pop needed to speak out. He told Zirin, “I want to say something and please just let me talk and please make sure this is on the record.”
Then he said,
“I’ve been amazed and disappointed by so much of what this president had said, and his approach to running this country, which seems to be one of just a never-ending divisiveness. But his comments today about those who have lost loved ones in times of war and his lies that previous presidents Obama and Bush never contacted their families, is so beyond the pale, I almost don’t have the words.”
Popovich paused for a second, took a deep breath, and then totally went off.
“This man in the Oval Office is a soulless coward who thinks that he can only become large by belittling others. This has of course been a common practice of his, but to do it in this manner—and to lie about how previous presidents responded to the deaths of soldiers—is as low as it gets. We have a pathological liar in the White House: unfit intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically to hold this office and the whole world knows it, especially those around him every day. The people who work with this President should be ashamed because they know it better than anyone just how unfit he is, and yet they choose to do nothing about it. This is their shame most of all.”
Some people believe that the sports world shouldn’t get involved in politics. But I disagree. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, it’s easy to see that Coach Pop is speaking the truth. And in this age of Trump, it’s more important than ever that the country hears the truth.
So thank you for your honesty coach. We need a whole lot more of this.
