“You know what isn’t acceptable? Blaming everyone but the shooter and the lack of gun control in our country. You even blamed the students. Your lack of sympathy proves how pitiful of a person you are.”
Too many young people in this country know the terror of watching their friends and classmates be slaughtered by a mass shooter. These kids are growing up in an environment that is unsafe and scary. The adults in Washington D.C., who are supposed to protect them, have decided instead that gun violence is just something that American kids have to accept so that they can protect their precious guns.
But the students in this country have had enough. They will not accept this carnage. The adults have let them down. But now they are finding the strength and courage to fight back on their own.
We’ve watched countless school shootings in this country. And every time our hearts break. Yet nothing is done. Nothing changes. But this time, following the mass slaughter in Parkland, Florida last week, something feels different.
It feels different because the kids are speaking out.
On Sunday, Donald Trump put out a series of tweets that really offended many of the students who survived the shooting last week.
Trump tweeted that maybe the shooting happened because the FBI was too distracted by the Russia investigation.
Very sad that the FBI missed all of the many signals sent out by the Florida school shooter. This is not acceptable. They are spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign – there is no collusion. Get back to the basics and make us all proud!

16-year-old junior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Morgan Williams, was outraged with Trump and his idiotic tweet.
Oh my god. 17 OF MY CLASSMATES AND FRIENDS ARE GONE AND YOU HAVE THE AUDACITY TO MAKE THIS ABOUT RUSSIA???!! HAVE A DAMN HEART. You can keep all of your fake and meaningless “thoughts and prayers”. https://t.co/al9DWBM2AW

Another student, Aly Sheehy, attacked Trump for making this shooting all about himself.
17 of my classmates are gone. That’s 17 futures, 17 children, and 17 friends stolen. But you’re right, it always has to be about you. How silly of me to forget. #neveragain https://t.co/i6Hldlo0Aq

Sarah Lerner, a teacher at Douglas, was also outraged.
There IS collusion, you clown. Get your head out of your ass & do something about what happened AT MY SCHOOL. This is the REAL NEWS. You came to Florida & didn’t talk to me, my students or my coworkers. You had a photo op & played golf. YOU are a disgrace to MY country. https://t.co/INB9sN3A52

High school senior Emma Gonzales blasted Trump on camera over the weekend.

“You know what isn’t acceptable?” said Carly Novell, a senior at Douglas. “Blaming everyone but the shooter and the lack of gun control in our country. You even blamed the students. We did report him, we tried. But how were we supposed to know what would happen? Your lack of sympathy proves how pitiful of a person you are.”
On Sunday, Douglas senior, David Hogg, said to Trump on Meet the Press, “You’re supposed to bring this nation together, not divide us! How dare you!”
Douglas teacher, Sarah Lerner, who survived the shooting, said that Trump’s statements were offensive to students, teachers, and parents.
“This is the REAL NEWS,” she said. “You came to Florida & didn’t talk to me, my students or my coworkers. You had a photo op & played golf. YOU are a disgrace to MY country.”
These kids are fed up. The adults have failed them. Donald Trump has definitely failed them…and pissed them off. But these kids are strong. They are the future. They are exactly what this country needs right now. And fortunately for all of us, many of them will be old enough to vote in 2020.
