“To all the generations before us: We sincerely accept your apology. And we appreciate that you are willing to let us rebuild the world that you fucked up.”
On Friday night, two of the student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO. And they were brilliant.
Cameron Kasky and David Hogg once again showed wisdom and passion beyond their years. They even gave the usually cynical Bill Maher some hope.
Maher told the two 17-year-old young men that they had “really given [him] faith that the kids today are actually very bright, way brighter than we were.”
As we’ve seen them in other interviews, the teens were charming and extremely smart. When Maher asked them about people calling them crisis actors Kasky said, “I am an actor, actually. I’m in Spring Awakening right now at the Parkland Performing Arts Center.”
Hogg told Maher that the White House called him the day before Trump’s listening session last month. The White House invited Hogg to attend the meeting that Trump held with parents and survivors of school shootings. But Hogg declined the invitation. He said the offer was “very offensive considering the fact that there were funerals the next day, there was mourning we still had to do.”
“I ended on this message with them. I said, ‘We don’t need to listen to President Trump. President Trump needs to listen to the screams of the children and the screams of this nation,’ ” Hogg said.
The boys came on Maher’s show to promote their upcoming March for our Lives on March 24.
“With the march we want Americans to stop being afraid of demanding our politicians to take action. They work for us, we don’t work for them,” Kasky said. “The march is us coming out and saying to our employees, ‘You guys suck at your job.’ ”
Kasky finished the segment saying,
“To all the generations before us: We sincerely accept your apology. And we appreciate that you are willing to let us rebuild the world that you fucked up.”
